What are A.J.'s Curb Design products made with?
  • For curbing and walkways, we exclusively use "Portland Cement" -proven to be durable and resistant to the elements.
How do you make the different shapes, colors and surface patterns?
  • For Custom Edging, A.J.'s Curb Design uses Custom Molding Equipment that extrudes the concrete into a variety of edged shapes. Colors are added to the concrete mixture before it is applied. 3 different colors can be added if done as an overlay. While the product is still soft, the surfaces can be "stamped" with a selection of creative patterns. For both curbing and walkways, a shiny appearance is achieved with a coating of High-Gloss Sealer.
How many different shapes, patterns and colors can I choose from? What sort of preparations do I need to make before installation?
  • Sprinkler heads and utility lines should be flagged before we begin with operations.
  • Check to see if the immediate work-site is clear of obstacles such as vehicles and outdoor furnishings.
Do I need to be at home when you get started?
  • If possible, we prefer our customers to be present at the work site. In the event this isn't feasible, bed lines should be lightly marked with colored chalk or spray paint.
  • Our crew will need to be made aware of any property line factors or special concerns.
Is the process very noisy?
  • Our concrete extrusion equipment is about as loud as a gas powered lawn mower.
How long does it take for the concrete to dry?
  • 24 hours is a standard period for curbing or before allowing foot traffic on walkways.
  • Full curing takes approximately 28 days. During this time you will observe the concrete becoming lighter in color.
What is the best way to maintain my Custom Curbing?
  • Watering the ground around the edges for the first three days will assist the curing process and help prevent cracks from developing.
  • Over time, calcium carbonate deposits (known as efflorescence) may form on the surface. This may cause discolorations in the concrete. Efflorescence can be removed using a solution of 1-part muriatic acid to 5-parts water.
  • A Curing Sealer is strongly recommended; particularly for colored concrete. This is best applied prior to the curing stage and will prevent the initial buildup of carbonate deposits.
What else should I know about sealing products?
  • Curing sealer will appear glossy at first but will result in a matte finish. To obtain a shiny appearance, a high gloss sealer, containing at least 25% solids can be applied after the 28-day curing process.
  • For best results, we suggest resealing your custom curbing after six months, and then once each following year.
  • At additional charge, we can provide this service for you or you can purchase a sealing formula at most hardware stores, and apply it yourself with a pump garden-sprayer device.
